What Causes Restless Leg Syndrome
People suffering from Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) have a very unpleasant, nagging urge to move and stretch. Problems are often present in the day, but usually get worse at night—beginning shortly after the person goes to bed. The evidence is still unclear as to what causes restless leg sydnrome, though this post will elucidate on what is known at this stage.
Restlss leg sydrome can be classified as either primary or secondary. Primary RLS is usually linked to genetics, though its exact causes are not known. Secondary RLS is usually prompted by other medical conditions such as Kidney Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, thyroid problems or pregnancy.
Dopamine
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter whose job it is to transmit signals between the nerves cells of the brain. Dopamine is required to produce smooth, purposeful muscle activity and movement. There is considerable evidence suggessting that RLS is related to a dysfunction in the brain’s basal ganglia circuits that use the neurotransmitterdopamine. Disruption of these pathways frequently results in involuntary movements.
It has been noted that individuals with Parkinson’s disease, another disorder of the basal ganglia’s dopamine pathways, often have RLS as well.
Medical research has pointed to many of the problems associated with restless leg syndrome as having to do with vitamin and mineral deficiencies. These deficiencies can cause chemical imbalances in the brain and of particular concern is a deficit of iron.
In a report (from a study done by Penn State and John Hopkins) released in June of 2003 the researchers found that cells in the mid-brain area were not getting enough iron. This find pointed to the fact that RLS is a sensory motor disorder and is not any form of psychological problem. This means that there isn’t actually any damage to the brain cells and because they are iron deficient there is a good chance that good treatments can be found.
What they found is that the brain cells of the people with RLS were lacking a receptor that allowed the cells to receive the amount of iron needed to function properly. Because the cells don’t have enough iron the neural signals may misfire causing the leg movement and the feelings of something crawling just under the skin. This does not necessarily mean that those with RLS are iron deficient; it’s just that not enough iron is getting into the appropriate brain cells to allow for efficient neural firing.
Conditions associated with secondary RLS, such as pregnancy or end-stage renal disease, are also characterized by an iron deficiency, further highlighting that disturbed iron in the body may also play a role in the development of the condition.
Although iron is necessary for dopamine synthesis, it is unclear as to what role the relationship between the two plays in RLS.
Medications
Certain medications have also been shown to cause or at least worsen restless leg syndrome.
Research into what causes restless leg syndrome can still be considered to be very much a work in progress, at this stage.
